Canceristhefourthleadingcauseofdeathforchildrenoverall,accountingforabout1in10childhooddeathsin.Aboutaquarterthesecancerdeaths,or,wereduetobraincancer.Therewereleukemiadeaths.
Overall,thereportshowsa20percentdropincancerdeathsamongchildrenandadolescentsfromto.
Accidentalinjuriesremainedtheleadingcauseofdeathforthoseunder19,followedbysuicideandmurder,accordingtothereport.
Therearestillmorenewcasesofleukemiaeachyearthannewcasesofbraincancer,butitnolongeraccountsforthemostdeaths.That’sduetoadvancesinleukemiatreatmentoverthepastfewdecadesandbecauseleukemiaiseasierthanbraincancertotreat,expertssaid.
“Sometypesofleukemiathatagenerationagowerealmostuniversallyfatalarenowalmostuniversallytreatable,”saidCurtin,astatisticianwhoworkedonthereport.
Dr.AlanWayneofChildren’sHospitalLosAngelestoldCBSNewsthenewdataisa“veryexcitingstepforwardinthewaronchildhoodcancers.”
“Immunotherapy,celltherapy–thesearenowgoingtobebroughttobeartoimproveonthisprogresssuchthatweexpectcontinuedsteadydeclineindeathsfromchildhoodcancer,”hesaid.
Three-year-oldAidenKramerisonechildwhohasbenefittedfromimprovedcancertreatment.Lessthanayearago,hewasinthehospitalbattlingleukemia,butafterfivemonthsofchemotherapy,heisnowcancerfree.Thoughhestillfacesahighchanceofrelapse,hisfamilyremainshopeful.
“YoulookatAidenandpeoplesayyouwould’veneverknownhewassick,”saidAiden’smotherAshley.“I’mgratefulforthateveryday.”
Thetrendsaresimilarforadults,too,accordingtotheAmericanCancerSociety.
